Hermannsdenkmal (Herman's Monument)
The vast Roman army crosses the Rhine in an attempt to extend their empire eastwards into a vast, forested region known as Germania. They did not succeed.
The reason? Because of one man. Hermann. A former conscript in the Roman army, he returned to his homeland and managed the impossible: to rally and unite the warring Germanic tribes under one banner and defeat the invaders. The memorial in the photo was built on a hill in the forest were this epic battle took place over two thousand years ago. It was built over a thirty seven years starting in 1838.
It is an incredibly important point in German history as it signifies the first instance where all the Germanic tribes unite under a common language, religion and culture and can be seen as the birthing of modern Germany. There were many more attempts by the Romans to conquer the land east of the Rhine over the next one hundred and fifty years, none were successful. Epic does not come close.
I was born about 15km from this spot and I still live there today. I hike these forests most weekends. It's one heck of a heritage to be a part of.
