Getting your lenses cleaned professionally

12 years 9 months ago #116909 by Patty Ganahl
After reading another members concerns about one of their lenses. I'm wondering if it's a good idea to have lenses cleaned professionally. Where they take the lens completely apart to clean all the elements and while there they can service whatever internals that need to be serviced?

What would they charge for something like this?

More than many lenses are worth. It only makes sense to have pro level lenses professionally cleaned. There are a lot of parts inside any lens and it takes lots of training to take apart and reassemble a lens.

I would be very concerned about them putting the lens back together the way it should be.

I know Canon will provide you with an estimate submitted online so you can decide the value at

I'm sure Nikon offers the same.

Shoot, learn and share. It will make you a better photographer.

I've had 2 of my lenses CLA'd at Advance Camera Repair in Beaverton, Or. My 35-70mm 2.8D was a complete disassembly and reassemble. couldn't be happier with them and will not hesitate to use them again. $125 for the 35-70mm I think.

Is it worth it to CLA an old lens? I think that is totally subjective and depends on the photographer's needs.

It is what it is.

If the lens is working and does not have dust or mold inside then it is a waste of money. Now if the lens is sticking and any dust/mold affect the image quality then maybe depending on how expensive the lens is. In the good old film days before AF lenses I used to clean and service my own, they were easy to disassemble and service, then reassemble.

I can't say how much it costs.

Here in Switzerland, when you buy a Sigma lens from the EX series, you do get a card from the swiss distributor (unless it is a lens from the grey market). This card gives you the right to send the lens in once a year. The lens is checked, cleaned and when needed, parts exchanged.

I used this service a few times now and can't complain about.

Only when a lens is having problems, which has been very rare for me.
