Reverse ND and Soft Edge ND filters becoming obsolete?

4 months 3 weeks ago #689974 by Sharna Lee
Some of the top cameras have upwards of 12+ stops of dynamic range.  Are Reverse NDs and Soft Edge filters still even needed then? Or are these next on the chopping block of obsolete'ville?

I don't use them anymore but protect the whites
at all times and costs.

A reversed ND is just an upside down ND filter.

Light is free… capturing it is not!

Not as long as photographers prefer to get things right when taking the shot.

You observation of the wide 12+ stops of DR means that if
the exposure is right,  comfortably snug in the histogram,
will permit spare you the expensive, cumbersome filters to
invest where it counts the most: a powerful converter.

Since the tonal values of the files are all "as is",  the conver-
ter and you will have a good time… I promise.

Umm, no it's not. It is dark in the center and goes to clear on each edge. I wouldn't describe it as upside down. Half of the filter is upside down so in that way, you could say that. Don't want to confuse folks.
