Do I need a UV filter and a circular polarizer?

I currently have one lens for my camera with a plain UV filter on it to protect the glass. I also have a circular polarizing filter that I swap in when taking shots outdoors. I'm about to get a new lens with a larger ring size, and I was wondering if getting a plain UV filter is even necessary. Could I get away with just getting a circular polarizer and rotating it to its minimum effect when shooting indoors?

A polarizer will still steal some light, so it's not advisable to use it in situations where you don't get any benefits.

I know it's advised that a UV filter be used... but I never do. I bought one once years ago for a new lens but over time quit using it and who knows where it is now. Of course I mostly buy older second hand stuff so it's not like buying an expensive new lens. I'm in the habit of putting my lens cap in my pocket and putting it back on when I'm done shooting (well not really done, more like taking a break in between a series of shots). So while I've lost a lens cap or two they're relatively inexpensive and I can get a spare easily enough (even use one off another lens that's the same size).

The UV is a "protection" filter. The polarizer is a work horse. Have both is not a good idea. Extra glass/extra distortion, plus the additional possibility of "flare" and vignetting.

Shoot, learn and share. It will make you a better photographer.
