how do you know you've set your polarizing filter in the correct orientation? even on 3" screen i can't tell the difference. i especially can't see any differences in the viewfinder.

When the Polarizing Filter is turned to be 90 degrees off of the angle of polarized light entering it ... it will block it.
ie. reflections off water ... leaves ... sky ...

You should see darkening affects on certain objects in the scene.
Not all light entering the camera can be effectively filtered.

i think i was looking at how the filter is made in the wrong way. i was thinking of the surface as almost like a gradiant filtering. Thanks for your help.

Well what I do is use the View Finder and rotate it till I get the effect I want.

I try to find something with a reflection or glare on it, and watch it as I spin the pol filter. It can be subtle, but if you concentrate you can see the glare coming and going. Even on an overcast day I can usually see this effect on foliage.

These are great illustrations. I also noticed that the clouds became much more defined with the UV insertion.

Polarizing filters have the most effect if the sunlight is perpendicular to your subject (to the left or right of what you're facing).. they will have little to no effect if you're facing the sun or the sun is directly behind you...

Here is a good reference page...

I have heard of photographers who use rangefinder cameras just holding the filter up in front of their eye, turning to see the effect, noting where the indicator mark is, and aligning it the same on their camera.
