The advantage is the square 4x4 (or even 3x3) can be used on a variety of lenses and are best for graduated filters, where as Bd says, you can slide to match the horizon (or wherever the line is needed). In the film industry you'll typically find a matte box and a 4x4 filter holder on the lens, and they only use the best of everything photographic.

With the above statements. Also you dont need the holder but then you will need a tripod since you will be using one hand to hold the filter over the lens. With a Graduated ND you can then position the line how you need it. With a round GND you only have the gradution is in the center which restricts you.
