Will SLR lenses work on DSLR?

My grandfather has plans to buy a DSLR, but he wants to know if his Nikon SLR lenses will work on the DSLR? I told him, I think so, but not sure. So does anyone know for sure?

that's good to know. My grandfather will be pleased, that he does not need to spend $ on lenses.

You might want to check with the dealer - or take some of the lenses in with you and test them.

In the case of Canon - I heard - there are early lens that had a bayonet style mount that will cause a problem on a newer DSLR camera as they "hit" the mirror. Later styles of the Canon 35mm EF SLR have lens that will work on a digital. Someone feel free to correct me on the Canon points if you like. The point is there might be some problems with some Nikon lenses and not with some others.

True for Canon. The old AE (I think that was the designation) lenses will NOT mount on the newer models.

Shoot, learn and share. It will make you a better photographer.

It depends on what type of mount they have & what camera he intends to get....If he has the older Pre-Ai (or Non-Ai as some call them) lenses, he will only be able to use them on certain base model DSLR's (D 40/D40x/D60/D3000/D31000/D5000/D5100)...They won't mount on any other Nikon DSLR's without damaging the camera. On the Base models, they will have limited functionality (no metering or AF (of course)....If the lenses are Ai or Ais mount, they can be used on any Nikon DSLR....The limited functionality still applies to the base models listed above and the D50/D70/D70s/D80 &/D90 models won't have metering either...If he gets a higher end body (D200/D300/D300s/D700/D2/D3 or any of the variants of the D2/D3 models) then he will be able to have some more metering options that the base & prosumer models don't offer...Plus, the higher end bodies have pentaprisms as opposed to pentamirrors which translates into better viewfinders..If his lenses are the older AF versions, they will work as expected on all but the base model cameras. The base models won't AF as the cameras do not have a built in motor to drive the lens.Hope this helps & message me if you have any further questions as I use older lenses on my digital...

All of my AF lenses work on my D80/D90 bodies but will not work on the bodies without built in motors. The lenses are fully functional on my bodies

:agree:
Exactly. Any F-Mount lens will work on the following bodies without damage, the D40,60 and lower Thousand series. For the D50,70,80, all Hundred Series and Single number series then you must use Ais and newer. The lenses older than the Ais will damage the focus motor unless Ais converted which some can be converted.
