Tamrons last 70-300mm for Canon was shocking (not tried the new one although heard reasonably good things) and within Canon the 50mm 1.8 is pretty much the cheapest thing out there but an absolutely stunning lens.
Although saying that I haven't ehard of a bad L series lens yet
