Question about recharging AA batteries for flash

13 years 1 month ago #44420 by Travel Nut
I'm a late bloomer to the rechargeable battery scene. I was wondering is it OK to charge batteries after a hour or so of use in a flash? When the batteries still have good juice in them? Basically if I'm done for the day, can I recharge the batteries so they are at 100% for next time I need them? So they may be 60% or 70% charged at that point.

Hi Sam,
You can do it, but depending on type of battery it may get so it doesn't hold the charge as well. A better option is to have additional sets, and drain them until nearly exhausted.

I let them drain and recharge right before the next time I use them

:agree: with the others. Many types of batteries still have "charge memories". If you recharge them too often, they will develop a memory of what they consider "charged". Buy more and drain, baby, drain.

Shoot, learn and share. It will make you a better photographer.

IMHO, the Sanyo Eneloops are the best rechargeable batteries out there...They don't lose power when sitting for long periods of time like other batteries

Wont some chargers drain the batteries for you before the fresh charge is given?

I am using energiser batteries in a varta charger, but I only charge them the day before I use them as they do lose charge quite quickly, I have about 20 batteries as I do like them to be completely flat before recharging, I do believe there are chargers out there that discharge also, but never seen or used one.

I try to drain them as much as possible before recharging. As mentioned above some rechargers have a feature which will finish draining them before starting the recharge.

I have recently read that charge memory, or whatever they call it when you don't drain a battery all the way before recharging, is something the battery manufacturers have really been working on. Some of the higher quality batteries now claim that charge memory doesn't effect them, and you can recharge anytime you want with no problems.

I've used a number of common brands, and they seem pretty good, but the very best brand I've used is POWEREX. I'm amazed at how long they last compared to Duracell, Energizer, etc.... Both between recharges and lifespan in general.

Really? Surprised, I might need to try them out. Thanks for the tip.

I like to make sure the batteries are near completely drained before charging them.
