Wasp like insect taking over a bee's home

12 years 7 months ago #133715 by steveheap
Of course I may have got my insectology all wrong, but I think this black wasp like creature is taking over a hole drilled in my deck by bees earlier in the summer. As far as I could see, the wasp was delivering pieces of grass which initially were sticking out of the hole, and then it went inside to tug the grass to make a nest, I assume.

Hand held with a flashgun on a stand with a rogue flashbender modifier to provide even lighting and let me get a better aperture. (f13)

Yes, the bees are pretty large with shiny black backs, and they have drilled about four holes so far in the large pressure treated beams that hold up my deck. The holes are completely circular, but then they eat out a bigger space about 1/4 inch into the wood - I've no idea how much of a space they make in there. Not sure what this black creature is!

Here is one of it pushing at some grass.

I'm not sure of the wasp's genus, but they were likely Carpenter Bees that made the original holes...I have them here in Georgia. The males will hover & dive bomb any other insect in the vicinity, but they are harmless (no stinger) The female is another story though...They look like Bumble Bee's...
