Very nice. Did you do any additional PP on the background or was it all in camera DoF? What lens and settings did you use? You got a great effect.

Shoot, learn and share. It will make you a better photographer.

I did use my CS5 to adjust contrast, saturation and vibrance but the DoF came from a REALLY close shot with my 18-55 kit lens on my D3000 with the lowest F stop possible.

Nice shot! But I'm even more impressed that you captured this with your 18-55 kit lens!

Thanks! I think a lot of people underestimate the abilities of the kit lenses. My buddy always tries to get me to buy used lenses from him cuz he hanges them all the time. I always tell him that he has to be a little more creative with his kit lens. Though I would like a better selection of lenses just for fun.

there is nothing wrong with any kit lens they are a great starting point for any budding photographer but do try other lenses for the variation, this shot is superb by the way. :judge: :judge: :judge: :judge: :judge:

Didn't mean to say a kit lens was bad, just impressed that you got close enough with it and the dragonfly didn't fly away!

Ah.....gotcha now. Got this with a little luck and a lot of patience. Plus the fact it was unusually cold that day helped. Slowed them down a little.

Actually, dragonflies are one of the easier insects to capture & they normally return to a perch if they have been disturbed, you just have to wait form them to do so.

:agree: They are probably one of the many insects who return to their perch.

Interesting, I don't ever see dragonflies in the area where I live, so I didn't realize that. Makes me wish there were more around to try and shoot!
