Ew.

How on earth do you manage to get them to stay still long enough? Well done.

Incredible shot! Looking at the eyes makes me wonder if this is where the idea for steel mesh came from...

How did you set this shot up?  I can't believe the detail, I have tried macro shots and... well let's just say it's a work in progress.

All of my macro shots are taken with an older manual focus "Lester Dine" 105mm F2.8 macro lens from the mid 1980's. It's normally paired with a matching "Lester Dine" mini ring/point light. I shoot with either my Nikon D300 or my D7100 in manual mode. Sometimes I use a softbox on my Nikon SB600 speedlight, but most times it's the ring light. My usual settings are ISO 200, SS 1/200th & F16 with the flash on 1/4 power. I  set my lens to max magnification (fully extended) & get my subject in the viewfinder. I "rock" myself back & forth until I get the focus on the eyes & then trip the shutter... It takes practice to refine this technique. I only use a tripod when I'm doing static subjects or stacking images in the studio... No Af & no VR... The short duration of the flash will stop any motion, be it mine or my subjects...I did crop this image about 50% in post...
