Grasshopper

After upgrading from a GE X500 to a Canon SX50 I decided to try some macro photography.  It's not the best, as I am still learning.  But I found I had a difficult time getting the camera to focus on the grasshopper even on a tripod.  Plus it was getting late in the evening so the natural lighting was not the greatest.  I tried a different rage of ISO's shutter speeds, and aperture settings and still had a difficult time getting a decent shot. What could I have done or what setting could I have used to make this a better shot?

Every lens has a minimum focus distance, the closest your subject can be to the focal plane and still be in focus. It looks to me as if your subject is well within that limit. Everything here is fuzzy. You don't indicate what mode you were in, but I presume it was macro. The specs claim a minimum focus distance of 0".

You may want to try manual focus, but it's difficult to know if that will help.

As for light, an inexpensive LED ring light can be helpful, but I don't know whether it would attach to that camera.
