Out and About in Africa

Hi All, I would appreciate some critique on my pics. I moved from a point&shoot to an SLR camera about two years ago. I am rather technically challenged but do like to think that I have some creativity to help me out. Thanks you in anticipation

you should be proud of yourself, you have an eye for composition and your exposures are great, very well done. :judge: :judge: :judge:

Joy, first :welcomeclan . Second- These are gorgeous! The light, the comp, the subjects all stunning. I believe you did the animals proud :) I must say- the one with the baby elephant is my favorite, then again I am hugely partial to elephants.

Other than I am jealous of the location. In my hunting days I never had the desire to hunt Africa. Now that I picked up a DSLR. It is very near the top of my bucket list.

Very nice shots. interesting crops of the photos. the elephants with the small one. Did you crop the top of the larger ones head off or was that what you had to work with. I would have like to see the entire head. It works though , I think because the little one is the real subject of the shot.

The pack of elephants, (thirsty heard) Maybe just a littel fill light on the faces

Great job and I again I would love the chance to be up close and personal with all your subjects

Thanks for your comments. I did crop the ellie picture - for two reasons. Firstly, the large one on the left had a radio collar on so there was a very obvious box on top of its neck. I belong to a camera club where, at the moment I need points in the Nature Wildlife category and anything manmade is not allowed in those shots. However, having cropped out the box, I noticed that you can still see the collar under its chin so I guess I will have to submit that one in a Pictorial category anyway The second reason was yes, to being the focus onto the baby who really seemed to be leading the group. I have been experimenting a bit with different and tighter crops.

Your advice about the fill light on the ellies faces in the Thirsty Herd pic is very constructive - thanks but again in Nature Wildlife you can only manipulate the whole pic and not portions thereof so I could add some fill light but it would then affect the pic as a whole and may change the mood. I will give it a try though.

Gosh, I am so impressed with the crits and advice I have had today being my first shot at posting some shots on the forum. Everyone has been so helpful.

I do hope you make it to Africa sometime - for animal shots Etosha Game Reserve in Namibia is absolutely awesome. Cheers for now.

If you have photoshop using a adjustment layer and mask out what you do not want changed. I used the words fill light a little too generic.

Also I may have been a little to critical on the fill light. I looked at it from my work computer and now from my home computer and it looks better on my home monitor.

I understand the issue with the radio collar. We have elk in NC that has collars and ear tags and even with them being free ranging it takes just a little away from the overall image.

I was going to comment on the water buffalo. He is one bad looking dude.

I see you live South Africa. So just a small trip for you to get photos like this.

They're very good shots actually. Well done (the exposure on one or two could be tweaked a little, but the angles etc. are great).

Thank you all for your input.

Randy, I have a lot to learn regarding photoshop and layers but will look into it - thanks. Must find someone to give me a few lessons.

Stealthy Ninja, yes, we are lucky to live in SA with all its wonderful fauna and flora. These were taken in Namibia and Botswana which meant quite a long road trip (8500km in all). Totally, totally worth it and I would recommend Etosha Game Reserve in Namibia to anyone wanting to do the wildlife thing.
