First one looks a bit soft (probably over cropped).

The second one is pretty nice on here, but when I got to your flickr and look larger it's also a bit soft.

Nice overall though.

Yeah, I know they are both a bit soft... still learning how to get the exposure correct so I am not blown out and have no detail. Trying to get the focus right is fun as well. Trying to figure out the best way.

The moon is pretty far away, maybe setting it at infinity would work

Which lens did you use for this? I suspect it might be a lens thing. The moon isn't too hard to shoot, it's so bright and basically all you need is a night fast SS. Therefore the SS shouldn't be a factor here.

Also checking your EXIF on the shot. It's shot at ƒ/11 which would cause diffraction to come into play (depending on the lens quality). Also you shot with a 200mm lens (not sure which one) so even with your Canon's crop factor coming into play, you'd have to do some HEAVY cropping to get these shots. I suspect these are 100% crops. So a real test for your lens/camera.

Just another thought... camera movement might be a factor. Are you using a stable platform and a remote shutter release? Try using a live view to reduce mirror bump. Also, most important, did you wear a white coat? White coats are the international symbol for scientists and lunatics...

Had a stable platform... was using a tripod, not the Ghetto one with built in cooler, even though I was at the beach, I used the tripod I got from Shanna and yes, I almost always use a remote shutter release for my night shots and was using it here. It was a bit windy and I tried to block the wind as best as I could but I did notice a few times the camera may have been shaking ever so slightly. It must be the lack of a White Coat that softened these shots.

Here is one more from the night...
