I shot this photo today in between patients. I think it came out pretty good but would like to know what others think.

Its a nice bird, and nice composure... but over all quality of the image is pretty poor in my opinion. its soft, grainy even?... and it seems like the focus is on the claws/beam near the bottom, not the head/eyes.

thank you for the comments. I was looking up at her, she was on a power line, in a situation like that how do I make sure the focus is more on her face?

Find and set spot focus on the eyes... recompose and shoot. Also the eyes are in shade while everything else is full on sun. This is a tough shot to manage exposure for. Set the exposure metering for center weighted or even spot and again expose for the eyes. The sky will be over exposed and the bright edges of the head might get blown out as well but the eyes will have some details and might improve the image overall. It is a difficult balancing feat that might be impossible to get without HDR - but that provides a whole different set of circumstances that are difficult with wildlife. I like this shot - these birds are magnificent subjects...

With the sun behind the subject you are always going to struggle to get any detail or the correct exposure on the subject. I always have my focus point set to centre point and then always make sure that the centre of the frame is on the birds eye, or any animal or person for that matter. Keep firing away and eventually it all starts to fall into place.

Good luck
