Sharp and I really like the bokeh with a hint of the fence in the back.  Very interesting shot.

This is a very nice capture. You can take this image to a completely different level with some fairly quick post work. I played with it a bit and was amazed what you could do with this image. Now, here is the critique. The image is overexposed a bit. The saturation suffers a little due to the overexposure. I personally don't like the fence in the background so I would blur that out in post. It was fairly easy to do. I made the background darker as well to make the bird pop out. It can use a little more sharpening also. The best way to illustrate what I'm talking about is to show you the results of about 5 minutes of work. A lot of this was done using ACR as a filter in Photoshop. If you would prefer that I not post the image, let me know and I will immediately take it down.

Thanks, Shadowfixer. First of all, I appreciate the honest critique. Second, I don't have a problem with you posting your example, as it's meant to be constructive and that's also helpful.

Now, in response:

I realize the image is a bit overexposed, but I liked the fact that it conveyed the brightness and heat of the day. In retrospect, I may tone it down somewhere between the original and your example. The colors of the Thrasher are more subtle than they appear in yours.

Regarding the background, I like the bokeh, although I realize it detracts somewhat from the bird. I personally don't like the darker background, because it detracts from the bright feeling and the cholla flowers in the lower right. It's all a matter of taste, and I appreciate you expressing yours.

Finally, sharpness is always a problem with my kit zoom, and I agree that this image could use a little more tweaking. As I'm sure you're aware, that's a little more challenging at full resolution than at the reduced size and resolution here. I usually work with CS6, so ACR as a filter isn't an option, but I use it through Bridge.

Anyway, I sincerely appreciate the input and will keep it in mind for further edits. Thanks for taking the time and being straightforward with your critique.

I understand your reasoning. I was heavy handed on a quick edit. I was trying to point out some possibilities all rolled into one. Again, nice capture.

Understood, and again, sincerely appreciated. I don't put 'em out there for critique if I don't want some honest feedback. BTW, I took the liberty of copying the image to one of my own servers and editing your post, so you can remove it from your photobucket account.

Thanks again.
