Male Blackburnian Warbler

Male Blackburnian Warbler - photo from Michigan's Eastern Upper Peninsula, the unknown best location for warbler photography.

Michigan's Eastern Upper Peninsula is way better than  any other United States area where a large body of water is a barrier during spring bird migration. Its better because there are 17 species of warblers nesting in the abundant pristine habitat close to the north Lake Huron shoreline - the first land migrating birds see after crossing the lake. They have a bounty of food awaiting - billions of midges and Spruce Budworms which are currently abundant. So the birds stick around for a quite a while to feed, while there are increased numbers of birds (including Spruce Budworm specialists) nesting because of the Budworm outbreak. Testosterone level in the males is through the roof because of this unique set of circumstances - lots of fighting. Another 7 species of warblers breed inland not too far away. This is also the best location for photography of these birds because when the males arrive to this area they are in their brightest plumage - not the case on the Gulf coast.

You have to experience it to believe it.    paulrossibirds.wordpress.com/workshops/

My brother in law photographs birds and travels all over the country.  He was just up in Alaska 4 months ago.  The colors of this bird contrast nicely with the background here.

Talk about super detailed!  Excellent shot, another reason to get some big glass.

I started with a 300mm small glass lens, then got a Canon 100-400 zoom. But When I rented a 600mm in Houston and tried it for birds the difference was obvious. I could stay further away and the quality increase was tremendous.
