Male Black-throated Green Warbler in Cedar

Warblers like this one are small (5.5 inches tail tip to beak tip) and often seem to constantly flit from one perch to the next.  If they remain at one location for over 2 seconds it is uncommon.  Here is a tip from a bird photographer (me) for others wanting to try it:  It pays to be able to follow warblers with your eyes and center the lens as quickly as possible on them while gaining focus. You can practice this by aiming at many different small objects at the approximate distance a warbler would be about 1/3 frame, centering and focusing on one object (such as small Xmas tree ornaments hung at various spots in a bush), and quickly on the next, and so on.  You can make it more challenging by putting the objects at greater distances of separation from one another (left, right, higher and lower).  You develop hand-to-eye coordination specific to bird photography by practicing this way and it pays off.  In this shot the bird landed in that spot for less than 1 sec. I was lucky that it gave a decent head position during that time.

I made a video demonstrating how I do this every year in early spring but I needed a plug-in microphone for my camera because of the wind.  People may have noticed the wind problem in my video intro to my workshop.  The mic arrived in the mail today, so I will get that video out soon, and many others.
