starting over

13 years 8 months ago #500 by S.Tuttle
I have recently lost all my gear following a burglary. 2 Canon bodies, 3 L lenses, all of which I was very happy with. Very upsetting, of course, but this calamity also gives me a chance to start over “the right way”. Whatever that means..
So, looking for any suggestions, but more specifically about two topics:
1. Canon or Nikon?
2. I’m thinking to get two bodies – full frame and crop.

Personal choice. Go somewhere where you can hold them and look at the controls. That could affect your choice. Either one is great.

Shoot, learn and share. It will make you a better photographer.

Unless you really need MP for some reason, I'd go with the D700 and D300s right now. Or perhaps the D7000 and save a little for lenses.

Depends.

7D and 5DII are also good, but the AF on the 5DII is a bit crap (good for landscapes and portraits though).

First off ... Sorry for your loss. Let me say that I am a Canon user but I believe that if I were to start over today it would be with Nikon. It just seems to me that Nikon is having better consistency with their new cameras bodies. An example would be a new 5D (mark 3) on the horizon to replace a not too long ago unveiled 5d (mark 2).

I'm a Nikon shooter so I would second the recommendation to go with Nikon because I like the lenses

Sorry for your loss. I can't imagine what I would do if I someone stoled my camera. Well since you already owned Canon, you know how they work. If you like to try Nikon, why not buy both a Canon and Nikon body. Then just buy the lenses you need for each body. Such as if you shoot landscapes and wildlife. Get a nice wide angle lens for Canon and a nice telephoto for Nikon.
