Need your thoughts on getting closer to 300mm

13 years 3 months ago #17625 by Silver Fox
I currently have a 70-200mm and by no means looking to replace this lens as this is my favorite. However I would like to get a lens that has a upper focal length of 300mm with out breaking the bank. I've found a couple lenses: 70-300mm and the 55-300mm. I was wondering if anyone had any experience or input on either of these lenses?

You gave little info, budget, present camera, what you want to photograph.
So, I will say this.... I have the Nikon VR70-300, and it is possibly the best lens for the money I own. Fair on D300, great on the D700. Pretty good walkaround type zoom.
I have no experience with 55-300.
When I go birding, its the 300 f4, simply a top notch piece of glass. I use it quite a lot on D700 with a 1.7tc and iq is very good. Might be out of your price range, new around $1200.00, me thinks. I will offer this, don't go cheap. Try them out if you can before you buy, you'll see the good glass is worth the money.........;)

OH! Sorry about that. I thought I gave enough info, my bad! Budget < $1,500, Camera - D200 and D300, no preference in what I photograph, I would however like to get into more wildlife photos. Thanks for the tip on the 300mm! I'm going to go and look up prices, that does sound like it would fit in my budget.

I can second the vote on the 300 f4 as i use it to shoot hockey and it is a great lens-well worth the investment.

Well for that I believe you can get the 80-400VR. Which is good reach for very little. I love mine but, it is strictly AF and has no internal motor so it is slower than the 200-400VR which is like arround $5K. For wildlife the longer the better. It is slower so you have to learn how to use it to get the best from it, like using the Limit Switch and I have learned to swithc from Auto Focus to Mamual quickly to get close and switch back. Also I prefer to use Mode1 in the VR which is it activates when the shutter putton is pushed, I get more keepes that way. The other thing I love about it is it is very light for a longer lens. Here are some hand held shots with it.

Like I said for wildlife longer makes happier.

I gotta say, Rob's sorta sold me on the 300 f/4. I plan to get this lens one day (hopefully Nikon give us something like a 400 5.6 VR first though, I'd prefer that).

What about a 1.4 converter? You'll lose 1 stop with the converter.

I just thought of this.

You have a D300 which is a 1.5x crop camera... so...

200x1.5=300 You're already there dude. :p

I guess what you really want is a 450mm lens. :banana:
