Has anyone really put to use their 50mm f/1.8 lens?

Frankly I think I've used this lens a couple times and kept it in the bottom of my camera bag. Now a days, it's not even in my camera bag. I'd sell it but it's not worth much. Come to think of it, I'm not even using my 50mm f/1.4 that much either. But I do like the image quality of the 1.4 over the 1.8.

I use my 50/1.8 for ball hockey in a poorly lit arena, for night sky (meteor showers), macro with extension tubes, more. A 1.4 would be better but the price would kill me.

Shoot, learn and share. It will make you a better photographer.

First of all, I do like all the Nikkor 50mm lenses that I have owned/used. I sold my AF 50mm 1.8D last fall for exactly what I paid for it and I kinda miss it. :( I have since bought a AF 50mm 1.4 and a manual focus 50mm 1.8 AI. I like the AF 50mm 1.4 a lot and it is amazing in low light, even if it is a little soft @ 1.4 it still looks good (Not as good as John L's Noct Nikkor though).

The real find this spring was a like new manual focus 50mm 1.8 Ai, bokeh isn't spectacular mind you, but the sharpness and contrast is pretty doggone stellar and for the $35 bucks that I paid for it, it's easily the best value for manual focus lenses that I've seen in my little corner of the world. I'd put the 50mm 1.8 Ai very high on the list of best lenses that Nikon has ever made, IMHO.

Uses....Landscape, portraiture, reversing for close-focus shots, etc.

It is what it is.

I have a AFD 50 mm F1.8 and I love it. I have not owned the other prime lenses but I am a happy owner of this lens simply it is cheap and produce great result. It works well with my D300 for general purpose shots. When I add my Raynox, it is perfect for my macro.

Thinking i'm selling my sigma 50, for a 50 f/1.8G.

That is a very nice photo!

I have one of those lenses but haven't put it to much use yet. I hear a lot use it for portraiture work. Is that right?

Still learning :)

I use mine for newborn photography a lot (small, closeup, portrait) and indoor low light situations because it's the largest aperture lens I have. But I feel it's rather limited for a lot of other uses, so I use a zoom with a wider angle for more general shots. If I had a 1.4 vs a 1.8, I'm sure I would use the 1.4 more. Sounds like you should go ahead and sell it. Won't get huge bucks for it, but enough to fill up a gas tank for sure. :) And someone out there I'm sure would love to have it.

I used to use my 50 f1.8D all the time, but now it has been replaced with my 28-80 f2.8. I will eventually get around to mounting back up and shooting some more but for now, I'll just keep using it as a macro lol.

Nikon 50mm f1.8D, Tokina 28-80 f2.8, Nikon 75-300, Sigma 18-200, Nikon SB-600, Nikon SB-25, Promaster triggers
