Nikon D800 36MP vs Phase One 645DF P65 Medium format camera

This question came to me from that Peter Lik thread above where I was asking how various cameras compared to one another. This got me thinking about the Phase One medium format 645DF which is able to fire off shots around 60MB to 80MB in size.

Will the Nikon D800 36MP even come close to the detail that this Phase One camera can capture? Or is it a lost cause for the Nikon?

Twice the resolution of 36mp is 144mp. Half the resolution of 60mp is 15mp. For 36mp vs 60mp I expect that it would be impossible for me to see a difference in sharpness and fine detail in very large prints. If I could I'd suspect it had more to do with the lenses than the sensors. One advantage that larger formats almost always have over smaller formats is that if there is such as thing as lens perfection it's easier to achieve in a big lens than a small lens.

So here's a question for you D800 owners or other high MP cameras. Do you have to use a tripod more often to insure a sharp shot?

Yes. Depends on subject matter too. For landscapes. I find myself using Mirror Lockup a lot more now.

For landscape I always try to use a tripod and Mirror Lockup. In good light I am starting to do a little more hand held shots. I still use Tripod more than I used to with the cam though.

Whether you need a tripod for sharpness is never a case of the cameras resolution in MPs. Support is a very important tool for photography when you want to achieve fine detail.
