Which Nikon 85mm?

9 years 10 months ago #379788 by Tim Kelley
I want a 85mm, but honest don't like the price of the 1.4, but like the performance.  The 1.8 is much better priced, but not as hot performance.  I would love to hear from the 1.8 users.  What do you think of this lens?

If this is the one you're asking about,  Nikon 85mm f/1.8G AF-S   Amazon has 235 reviews, and two are one or two star...(Probably Canon shills).....That's a good place to get some opinions.....;)

Why so serious?

I think the 1.4 is considered (arguably) the premier portrait lens in the Nikon lineup. But you're right, that price tag is a show stopper.

What I see is that the resale prices of the 1.8 seem to be stuck at $400, and Nikon puts that lens on sale about once a year for $400. Even at $500 MSRP you're going to retain value until such time as you can sell it and acquire the 1.4.

Me, it's currently 2nd on my list.

I owned the 85 1.8 before and it's an amazing lens. Sure the 1.4 is a little bit faster and maybe a tiny bit sharper (maybe) but the 1.8 is seriously THE best lens for the money I've owned. The Sigma 35 1.4 being 2nd best only because it's a bit more pricey. In fact I'd say it's the 2nd best portrait lens I've owned (I like the zeiss 85 1.4 a little more, but that's double the price). I was constantly amazed at how sharp and beautiful the 1.8 images look. In fact I would say the only reasons to get the 1.4 is if you either have way too much money, some how need 1.4 or are really rough on your lenses and need the slight improvement in build quality.

Get the 1.8 you will not regret it.

I plan on buying the 1.8 this summer when I have more funds.

I own the 85 1.8G, and from what I've read it's sharper than the 1.4? (new design)

I agree with stealthy, best lens out there for the money.  Amazing results.  The 1.4 is more creamy than the 1.8G, but the cost to performance has diminishing returns. Of course the build quality of the 1.4 is better.

Here's two shots with that lens.
