Why don't cameras show shutter count?

When you factor in all the other items that are stored in these cameras and how simple of a figure this is, why not?

Yeah, seems like a simple add on, never got this one myself either.

Is there a way to check it other than the EXIF data? Guess I've never really thought about it other than that.

Unless you changed it in the menu,  the photos ARE numbered. DSC0001, etc...

Yeah, but you only see that when you export the photos?

Mine clicked over so many times that 0001 numbering is way too short.
They should add at least two more digits.

What do you shoot most of the time?

Canons are usually only good for 1000 shots max, Nikons are made to shoot a million or more......:)

I suspect my d7000 does show shutter count. I started shooting with it and when I MTY and format the card, the frame # has never returned to zero. What happen's after 4 spaces I've yet to find out.

Has anyone stumbled upon this lengthy writeup on it? Still it would be nice to have the value stored in the firmware and accessed via the menu & of course non-resettable.

Exactly.
No there is no way to read the count without reading the EXIF. Just watch your image numbers, when it resets to 0001 then you are at 10K. Mine is at 36K right now I think, but I do not really care. It still shoots, and that is all that counts.

They can do it at the Nikon facilities and some Nikon authorized repair centers.
