Nikon D80 built-in flash doesn't open at all

5 years 9 months ago #592365 by Chewy
Well this isn't good.  The built-in flash of my D80 doesn't want to automatically pop up in Auto mode, and while discussing it doesn't release in any of the other modes when I push the flash button.  You can hear it click, but that's it, nothing releases.Any thoughts on what I can do here?

Appreciate the help.

If you can open it manually, then the camera menu will help you there.
It was possibly configured wrong for the way you want to use it.

Light is free… capturing it is not!

A) The catch is stuck.
2) Don't use on-camera flash. Get a speedlite, at the very least. Much more flexible.

I disagree with your first sentence, OP.  I think it is good.  A photographer should never ever use on camera flash for anything other than a snapshot and your cell phone should make perfectly good snapshots.   Having your lens and your flash aimed at the subject from the same place produces terrible light modeling.  Don't do it.  Get a cheap speedlight and a synch cord that will allow you to put the flash unit away from the camera.

One can soften and lower power on onboard flash, then can be somewhat useful in limited situations. Other than that its awful...
