Nikon D850 creates a medium format "look"

5 years 6 months ago #609022 by Remy Hedrick
I've come across as of today 2 Nikon D850 owners who made some sort of reference to their D850 creating a medium format "look".

Now that I have heard this twice, what in the world are they referring too?  Is it because it has like a zillion mega pixels?

It must be that, its a full frame camera "only"...

Why so serious?

I think that, to better understand that statement, you need to spend some time learning about how depth of field works. It depends upon a number of things, including a "circle of confusion", which is based on picture element size, along with sensor size, aperture, focal length, etc. And it's why you can't exactly replicate a given shot on a sensor of a different size and different density. You can change one parameter, you change everything (to at least some degree).

That said, medium format and large format have a "look". Does that mean you can get that look from a  full frame sensor with 40+ million picture elements? Um, no. But you can move in the direction of greater detail and faithful rendering.

And then knowledgeably mention that it would be easier to get a Phase One if one really wants a medium format "look".

No.  You have encountered a couple of amateurs proud of their new cameras that don't know what they are talking about.

Its is a well known feature of the D850, it can compose and crop square captures.
Of course, the MP count falls to the equivalent 24 x 24… where a third of the count
falls to 30MP or so!

…and, sorry, I know what I'm talking about.

Light is free… capturing it is not!

They weren't referring to aspect ratio. They were referring to the "medium format look." This is just like some say this or that lens has that "Zeiss look" or "Leica look". They think they perceive a visible difference in the images versus other cameras. It's hard to explain but it generally refers to micro-contrast, color transitions, etc..
