Any major reasons to go with the III vs the II which of course is much less on price now?  
SWM into chainsaws and hockey masks seeks like-minded SWF. No weirdos, please

Hie thee to the google and do some research. From less than five minutes searching and reading, it appears that the III is considering significantly better than the II. It also depends upon what lenses you pair it with.

I wanted to use a TC on my long lenses but the tests results
of all three magnifications were not positive… so I don't.

I was thinking about teleconverters just the other day.  the 1.4x and 2x have been upgraded to III, however the more popular 1.7x is still on the II.  I wonder when Nikon will come out with a III for the 1.7x?

I use a 1.4 II and a 2 III on my 300mm f/2.8.  As far a IQ goes, the 1.4 is hardly noticable and the 3 is as well if you stop it down a little.  3 wide open is a little softer but not unbearable.  The main thing with the 3 is that when you stop it down a little you're getting close to f/8 which can a limiting factor in lower light situations.  It effects AF as well.  With the 1.4 effecting it a little and the 2 effecting it noticably but not to the point of no use.   As much as I love my TCs, there's no real replacement for large glass.  Sadly I'm not ready to put down 12k on a 600mm though...

I've yet to test them on my 70-200 FL, I wouldn't use them at all in my VR II due to image quality.

Unless you need every pixel for some reason, you will get better images by cropping than by using a TC.

I disagree with a good prime and the 1.4 II, the image degradation is very minimal.  I did some testing with the 300mm f/2.8, keeping the iso and other things static and adjusted the flash to make up for the loss of light and the loss of quality wasn't even noticable, unless you were zoomed in 400% and pixel peeping. 

The 2 III does have noticable downsides both in IQ and AF but it's far from bad.

Now put those on the VR II...

So using a 2x TC on that 600mm of yours would turn it into 1200mm f/6.3?

Yes a 1200 mm… but not so sharp at any distance as tested.

My mistake. I was thinking of the 400 f/2.8, not the 600. The 600mm f/4 would end up at f/8, of course.
