Nikon D860 and Z7 II to have 60MP Sony sensor?

5 years 2 weeks ago #638893 by Harrison J
I was watching a video from Tony Northrup and he was talking about this new Sony astro camera that has 60MP FF sensor.  They were speculating that this could be the next sensor  for upcoming Sony and Nikon cameras.

You think next generation of both of these cameras will take the big jump up to 60?  Dang that would be awesome.

I'm going to go with "disagree" here.

Having now edited a few files from a D4s (16MP) and seen (unexpectedly) usable results at ISO 25600, I think better ISO performance would be more advantageous than more pixels. At a certain point, unless you need to actually print large, or crop aggressively, more is not necessarily better. I'm not saying there's no need for that, just that the value of such a change is unclear.

I could be wrong.

I know that RAW file sizes are starting to get ridiculous.

Indeed, quite heavy.

In terms of pixel count, I would go for higher than my
D850 since I get better results with files at 200% than
using a TC.

ISO is an other area where I would welcome improve-
ments as low as 3200.

IIRC Nikon has been moving away from using Sony sensors in their cameras.  So I doubt.

1000% on all levels.  Screw higher MP, let's get higher ISO performance and keep improving the IBIS.

Figure out ways to keep more information and compressing it so data isn't destroyed, that will solve the crazy huge RAW files.

Sorry, but I have a tough time taking these guys serous.  They have come out with some really bizarre claims lately.

D860 will be incredible when ever that comes out.

Agree enough with the huge files, let's see better ISO and autofocus
