On a D300 or later (you must have on of these to be talking about memory banks) you can save and later reload most of the settings to your memory card. You do this through the "Save/load settings" item in the the Setup Menu. Formatting a memory card will erase the saved settings, but not the in camera ones.
Many people save a master set of settings on an old small memory card (say 32Mb or less) used only for this purpose.
