What are in your opinion the top Nikon lenses to have?

13 years 4 months ago #8066 by Monster
So past few days I have been researching a 12-24mm and a couple other different lenses. This brings up a question, more of a opinion I'm going to guess.

So post up what do you think are the top 5 or top 10 Nikon lenses to have in your camera bag.

That's a highly subjective question which is going to vary according to people's shooting styles, budget & camera being used. Personally, I'd have a wide angle prime lens, a fast normal, a super telephoto & 2 zooms, one a wide to normal 7 the other a normal to tele...Plus my macro lens...Since I don't have unlimited funds, my lenses are older versions which I can pick up for less & still have good quality lenses...All of mine are full frame FX lenses (I only own 1 DX lens)

Understood and I agree. So let's keep this open, post up your favorite lenses and what camera you are using them on? :cheer:

Any of the gold ringed Nikkor lenses would work, preferably on an FX format camera. Not that DX cameras don't have their positives as they do. Personally I have a slew of older prime lenses in my colletion, ranging from 20mm to 300mm...If I had the extra $$$, I'd pick up a 24-70 & 70-200 F2.8 zooms..It's not often that I shoot wider than 20mm on an FX camera

Well I shoot a fair amount of wildlife so if you want reach but are constrained by budgeting then the 80-400VR. I love mine or the 70-300VR if that is even too much. Most of my other lenses are all film/FX and range from my 10.5 fisheye to 105mms. It really depends on what you shoot most.

I like my 300mm f4, use it on my D300/D700, and often with a 1.4 or 1.7 TC
The 24-70 2.8 stays on the D700 most of time.
I use a 10-24, and 16-85 on my D300 most of time.
Also carry a 50 1.4 and a Sigma 150 2.8 (only non Nikon)....;)

Why so serious?

My lenses tend to be Nikon FX and range from 18-35mm f3.3 , 35-70mm f3.5-4.5 , 50mm f1.8 , 80-200mm f 2.8 (my favorite for shooting hockey) and a 300mm f4 (again hockey) all are in my bag all the time. I have several fast non Nikon lenses , a Tamron35-70 f 2.8 and a macro 100mm f4 lens that i carry depending on the situation. I then can use these on both my D90 and N90s bodies so I don't have dedicated glass for digital or film

Holy trinity of zooms, 200 f/2 vr II for isolation, and PC-E's for architecture and landscape.

A 600 f/4 for sunsets.

Nikon 600mm is a sweet lens! I have this one saved in my favorites. To bad I can't justify spending on it!

14-24
24-70
70-200 (2.8VR II)
200-400

Then the PC-E range 24 PC-E and 85 PC-E (45 PC-E is good too, but I personally think you only need the 24 and 85).

105 2.8VR (micro) if you want to do those.

All the long primes (why not)

24 1.4G
35 1.4G
85 1.4G

I'm ignoring the existance of the 35G, for my bank accounts safety.

It's very low on my list actually.
