Question about (VR) Vibration Reduction

Why do they recommend you turn off Vibration Reduction when using a tripod? Wouldn't that only make the still that more stable?

Very nice to meet you!

Good question. If I had a VR lens I may be able to answer for you. I do agree with you, why turn it off, as I would think it would only double up on the stability.

I don't know if this varies between manufacturers, but for Canon, the answer is absolutely yes. I did an article about this exact problem: Avoiding blur on slow shutter speeds .

The short version - I spent a long time looking for all possible causes of some blur on a picture of a Christmas tree, but as soon as I turned off the vibration reduction on the lens, the problem immediately went away.

The past couple of issues of Outdoor Photographer had two great articles concerning image stabilization/vibration reduction (IS/VR) and their various nuances. In general, it's best to turn off IS/VR when using a tripod. However, as one of the articles note, this is very dependent upon the make of camera and possibly the lens. I searched on the OP site and found the two articles:
