How to take a photo of pink flowers in glass vase and black back ground?

12 years 10 months ago #104394 by Mah and PaH
I want the edge of the glass vase to have that white line, no reflection in the front surface of the vase. I would like the color of the pink flowers to pop over the dark solid black background.

Can someone help me on how I can achieve this? I know I have seen others create this sort of image. Just not sure on how they set up lights and settings.

Thank you

This can be accomplished in a couple of different ways. You can use a black cloth background set behind your subject (further back the better). Or, what I do is to use a speedlight with fast shutter speed on my camera (my D70s has a 1/500th top sync speed). By using the fast shutter speed & a small aperture, you effectively block all ambient light from the illuminating the background (it still helps to have some distance from your subject to the background)...While I had no vase in this shot below, it was taken in bright sunshine

Love the flower shot Scott, I really need to get out and practice different things. I'm in a rut.

You really haven't told us much about the set up. Will this be 'studio' shot or 'on the fly'?

If it's staged, keep your background 1-1/2 to 2 stops below the foreground. Then put a small amount of vasoline or some other translucent material in the inside of the rim.

Show us your results.

No matter how fast I go, there's always someone slower in front of me.

With all the bugs & flowers around, it's easy to stay out of ruts doing macro...There is a plethora of subject matter

These guys made good video's. To bad they haven't made any new ones lately.

OP- high speed flash sync is your friend ;)
