On the males, the four front legs (that look like open arms) are generally smaller and narrower than a female's. Also, the male's body is flat and wide, whereas the female's body is more vertical and round. Overall, the male is much smaller.

There are about 2000 species of crab spider worldwide and 200 are in North America. The ones in my pix here are called Flower Spiders and, they too, come in several species.

I just found another one today. I took my camera with me ... just in case. I love the suspense in this shot:


Sure, practice makes perfect but, unless you learn from your mistakes, you are only perfecting your ability to fail.

Funny thing is, I'm an arachnophobe when it comes to spiders indoors. Absolutely terrified of them. But outdoors, as long as they're not crawling on me, I can get pretty close to them without issue. When I was a kid, I used to feed them ants ... until the ants started to bite. Ant bites are extremely painful!!

Sure, practice makes perfect but, unless you learn from your mistakes, you are only perfecting your ability to fail.
