Can anyone recommend a good photography school? Preferably on the East Coast? What about online classes? I see lots offered - are they worth it or a scam?

There are few good ones, however you can learn a lot for free, at your own pace, in places like this. Join a few photo forums and get involved. See if there are any photo or camera clubs in your area. Save the tuition and buy some toys (lenses, accessories, etc).....;)

Why so serious?

There are a few really good online schools, PPSOP is one that I have looked into for my sisters son who is getting into photography. But as mentioned already, experience is your best friend.

Depending on where you live, many colleges offer wonderful Photography Programs. One of the best of these on a community college level is Orange Coast College in Costa Mesa, CA.

And with all the government incentives to get people into school, you should be able to come up with loans and grants to cover tuition and fees.

The best is the Parsons School of Design in New York City. You don't have to go all the way to the west coast - but that might be nice this time of year!

I would suggest to take a look at ppsop.com/ Bryan Peterson is the owner of this school and has authored a number of excellent photography books. I've read nearly all his books and even went though one his online courses. So I can speak from experience.

The question is, how far do you want photography to take you? YOu could learn as an assistant to a local studio or New York Institute of Photography has a good mail order course. First figure out where you want to go with your work. Local Portrait studio? Fine art? Commercial product imaging? There are lots of opportunities and you probably won't want to master them all.
