Out of the 3...lens, tripod, flash. If you could only afford one of them at this time, which would you buy?

Well right now for me since I only have a kit lens, then I would buy another lens. However if I was happy with the lens I had, I would go for a tripod.

Since my lenses are only normal to tele right now, I would go with a lens, something wide.

It is what it is.

If I had a Nikon D3X and 28-300 I'd go for the following depending on what I was shooting...

Landscapes: circular polarizing filter, tripod & cable release, then a wider lens.

Portraits: speedlight, then a portrait lens.

Low Light: fast prime lens or a speedlight.

Sports or Wildlife: fast long lens.

Family Snaps: speedlight

I would buy another lens as I have a good tripod and two flash units but a third flash would be nice too...

Flash - just because with a flash you can freeze motion and eliminate the need of a tripod in some cases.

I agree a prime lens and a flash are two pro necessities. Flash is used not just to add light in dark spaces, but to control contrast in harsh lighting.

Tripods are for still lifes and landscapes. And you can always use a table & bean bag (or mini tripod) instead.

That's what I'm talking about.

OP- depends on what existing equipment you have already. If you have a lean collection of lenses with a void in your focal range, I would go with a lens.
