Question to Nikon owners who shoot in RAW

12 years 9 months ago #114083 by nikkie nature
I've read that Nikon uses a proprietary RAW process that needs its own software to pull the image out. I've also read that the standard software Nikon issues is not complete and it's higher level software is?.

I don't plan on shooting RAW that often but hey if its there then it might be nice to play around with when I want to be creative.

Can someone tell me if the standard is good enough.

My understanding is that RAW is not a standard format. Every manufacturer's RAW files are different. However, any recent editing software that reads RAW files (including Photoshop Elements, Photoshop, Lightroom, Paint Shop Pro, and many more) will read from all the major camera brands. You don't need Nikon software to read Nikon's RAW format.

I use Lightrroom and Photoshop with Nikon cameras. I haven't used Nikon's software, but I believe the difference between the basic and higher version is in the editing options, not the ability to read the RAW files. Both will read the files without a problem. The basic software provides basic editing tools. The advanced version lets you do more with the images.

Download Capture NX2 and play with it. It takes a little while to get used to using it, but once you do, it is a very nice tool. I always process my raw files with NX2 then bring them into photoshop for the finishing touches. The color control points are a nice thing to have in the initial process. I don't use it for noise reduction. The NR sucks as far as I'm concerned. I do use it for the initial sharpening of the image or what others call capture sharpening. Is it a lot better than CS5? No, it's probably not, but I like how it works and the results I get.

Most camera makers have a proprietary RAW data format. Each camera maker usually produces a unique format for each camera model so if you upgrade your camera you also have to upgrade your RAW converter.

Nikon's View NX, which comes with each camera, can display your RAW images. If need be you can go to Nikon's USA web site and down load View NX for free.

Nikon and Canon both have their own data system that lets them covert the RAW data in exactly (or very close to) the way you have your camera set up.

Adobe, Apple and others make their own versions of these RAW converters (basically they get as close at they can, but they often don't get it 100% right).

Personally I make my own profiles for LR by using my X-Rite Colorchecker passport (and the Adobe Raw Profile software).
