Stacking lenses

I received John Shaw's "Closeups In Nature" yesterday and have been enjoying it. There is a section on stacking lenses where you use a male to male filter ring to reverse mount a second lens. I know this book is old and I was just curios if this is a technique that is used any more and if any one had tried it.

Yes, it is still used. Make sure you mount the longer lens to the camera & the shorter one reversed on front of it (of course you have to make sure they are of the same filter diameter)...Use prime (fixed focal length lenses as well say a 50mm reverse mounted on a 105mm lens via a reversing ring)

Thanks this is something I will have to play with but at a later date. Right now the lenses I have would not match up. I wanted to know if this was something that was done with digital or only applied to film.

IIRC, any technique mentioned in the book can be applied to digital...I'll have to look at my copy (haven't done so in years)

Hi guys,
Hope you don't mind me joining in the thread, but thought it worth a mention. Instead of a "reverse ring" what you'll need is a "reverse coupler", which can be found here . They are available with various size on each side to accommodate different filter-thread sizes.
Have fun.

I meant coupler, it's no fun getting old :toocrazy: :toocrazy: Didn't know about them being available with different thread sizes on each end though...

I've done lens stacking with very little success, but have seen good results from others. A few tips:
Should your main lens be a zoom, try and set it to its longest focal length.
The shorter the front lens, the greater the magnification factor.
Too much difference in lenses diameters may induce vignetting and other image quality problems.

Good luck........:)

Why so serious?
