Do they rent a negative scanner?

I have 2 boxes of old negatives that I just found. I don't want to buy a negative scanner as I won't have any more negatives after this box is done. So does anyone rent one of these?

The thing I did was to buy a Nikon slide/negative scanner on eBay, scanned all my old negatives and slides and then sold it again. It is surprising how little you lose on good quality used equipment!

You can also take your time - I think I had it for about 3 months.

Depending on the number of negatives you need to scan, it might be cheaper to buy a used one, than the time of renting one.

You could also buy one, scan everything in a couple of weeks and return the scanner by the return date. :)

Or buy one, use it, and sell it "used" -- probably end up spending less than the rental cost..

I've had negatives scanned plenty of times by a local photo lab, I think it's pretty easy anymore for them to scan onto a CD. I think it cost more to go back in later and have it done than to have them scanned at the time the film's developed, but it's do-able. Some places offer restoration too for older negatives.

If the negatives are cut into small strips a photo lab will most likely charge you a fee per frame. If they are uncut and one long roll- they should charge you a drastically reduced rate. I say get a used one and resell it when done. That way you have time and if you find a new box you have time for that as well.
