Camera gear stolen in NYC

12 years 9 months ago #117003 by Thirsty Beaver
I just got a call from a friend of mine who is vacationing in NYC as we speak where he had his D3s, 70-200mm, 300mm and I want to say some other lenses and flashes in his Lowepro (I think) bag, that was just stolen from his rental car! He apparently had the equipment behind the passenger seat under a large towel while he was in Macy's (Or maybe he was near Macy's  ) When he came out to get his car to head out, the rear window was broken and all his gear was gone! They apparently even took the battery charger that was sitting on the passenger side floor board! :owned:

Man, I didn't know what to say to the guy. I guess he had a police report filed and was sitting and wondering what to do. He was up there to photograph the city. That's a lot of equipment to be stolen. I forgot to ask if he had it insured. I hope so!

I'm going to check my policy today! Anyone have been victim of theft like this?

That is just horrible, not a way to remember a vacation! Good luck with recovery of his gear.

Does he know the serial number of his lenses and cams? I'd look on ebay and craigslist for similar items and see if I could find it.

Not sure, I'm going to be speaking with him later today and will ask him that.

There's been lots of stories of people going on either of those sites, and asking people for serials, and finding their gear. They then contact the authorities.

sorry to hear mate, my heart goes out to you, having had my home broken into 3 times in the past i know how you feel, people say lets hope it was insured but thats not the answer, it can replace the goods but not memories, your camera is your tool and your hands become fimilar with the tools, the feel from one object to another is different even tho they might be the same, not to mention the inconvienance of replacing everything. Lets use the laws to chop of the hand like they did in the old days no hands ! no theft !!!!:nunu:

Unfortunately, in urban areas everywhere one must strictly adhere to the rule of leaving absolutely nothing visible anywhere in the passenger cabin, and even clothing should be put in the trunk, to avoid the thought there may be something of value under it on a seat or floor. I travel frequently, and often drag along a load of equipment similar to your friend's. I don't dare NOY to take it with me whenever I need to leave the car. Sad, but true. At least, here we are reasonably safe from getting mugged for it, which is not the case in my hometown. Naples, Italy, where I don't even take a camera with me on the street, where there are always great ops, because it will attract attention I wouldn't welcome...
