When doing portraits where do you cut off body parts?

Is there a general rule as to where you cut off body parts in portrait shots? I've not done much portrait work, but trying to get more into it. I took a portrait of my wife over the weekend and the ones that I chopped off for example at the knee's just look "off". So this has me wondering.

Thanks in advance for the help.

I've always been told to crop half way between joints

Agree, if it bends at that point, move your crop

Either don't cut off body parts at all. If you have too, shoot in this form..
headshot.. head and shoulders
half ...waist and above
3/4.. shin and above.

Try your best to never crop off arms and head. If you plan to include the feet, include the whole foot.

I've seen portraits of people where it's suppose to be a full body shot, but only half of the foot is in the photo.

Big thing is you don't want them to look like an amputee. Crystal gave you the right advice as well as the halfway between joints. This advise goes for cropping pix too
