Have you advertised casting call or free model portraits to build your portfolio?

I would like to get some new material for my portfolio and was thinking of way I could get some gritty and beautiful people to want to let me take their photos with out me having to pay for them. If I hire models, this adds up pretty quick, but if they are getting some free shots for their portfolio, yet I can still use the images in my portfolio, it's a win/win? What do you think?

Sounds like a good idea. I know some photographers who I am network with on facebook announces a casting call on their wall, looking for models/seniors etc..

It's fairly common to see this type of thing on Craigslist. I haven't tried it myself but I'd be interested to hear how it works out for you. You should probably be prepared to give a whole lot of direction though. I'm guessing some of the people who will respond to this have little or no modeling experience and are using it as their opportunity to try and build a modeling portfolio.

I have in the past offered to do newborn & senior pics at no charge in exchange for the use of the photos for portfolio building. It was a win/win for me because the "models" liked the images I created enough that I gained a loyal customer as well as a few of their friends along the way.

I do run promotions from time to time where I offer a free 8X10 when they enter a contest. I put a disclaimer on the entry form stating any images produced from the sitting can be used for advertisement. I run these promotions when I know the sessions are going to be slow (after Christmas or during the early part of the week, etc..) There have been times I wanted to do a themed weekend & would set up the promotion to test the setting to be sure it looked the way I wanted it to in the final images.
