Have you ever thought about why DLR's still have mechanical shutters?

With all the advancements in technology, why not have electronic shutters? That would eliminate some shake during macro and low light shots?

I see your point, but the curtains do protect the sensor. Some Nikon cameras have electronic shutter speeds above 1/250 (the real sync speed) so you can use most ANY shutter speed with flash.

The D70 and D40 (non-X) have this. They claim 1/500 as that's a full charge of many flashes. But you can use higher.

As Matthew said it does protect the sensor or actually the filter to some extent from dust. I really dont see a reason to change them because they have improved greatly with speeds up to 1/8000.

Right now it's because there are several issues with electronic shutter technology. It's said there are timing accuracy problems and image quality degradation. I think they will get the problems figured out at some point.
