Why the need for both compact flash and SD cards?

Why the need of camera's that use compact flash and others with SD cards? The compact flash memory cards look out dated and bulky compared to the SD cards? So how come camera makers are still making camera's that use the bulky compact flash?

SD cards are no where near as fast as compact flash cards.

With the proliferation of compact point and shoot cameras the SD cards are a better fit for the smaller cameras. CF cards work better in the larger DSLR bodies due to more room to work with.

SD cards have 4 bit data transfer busses as where the CF have 16 bit busses so they have faster speed. SDs though can write at 133x or 20MB a second but, the CFs will write at 300x or 45MB a second. Both are still plenty fast but when you are talking about dumping your image buffer when shooting a fast series, the added speed makes a difference, especially true for larger files sized images. The other place it makes a difference is in when uploading to your computer, the faster the card the less time it takes to get them. I prefer CFs.

The answer regarding the speed of a CF card versus an SD card has already been provided ...... no sense going thru it again.

The Canon 1D cameras have two card slots and use both!
