Good for you, Scotty! All it takes to be great is solid skills in photography. No fancy Ps tricks or "L" glass required.

One of my online students recently won a prestigious photography award in NZ.

Click on '"2011 results" (at top) and then The Human Element. She won silver against others with masters degrees. She's had her camera about a year.

Yes. It was just born seconds before.

Anyone could have taken the picture. The trick was being there ready, and waiting, for that moment to happen

That's the point, Scotty. It touches us all. It's so human.

Thanks for pointing it out. I wouldn't know that if you didn't tell me.

I think Koudelka's photos are phenomenal. I like the perspective and the vantage point he uses in many of them, where you feel you're looking up at the trees or statues, and some seem almost out of proportion. Some seem rather skewed or something, sort of throw you out of kilter a bit - I like that.

I like the way he made the shadows part of the image. There's one where there's a shadow of an obelisk it looks like that is in the foreground (you don't see what's causing the shadow) and it extends exactly to the sculpture in the background. I think these photos illustrate how changing your vantage point can change the perspective of the image.

These to me are outstanding B&W photos. I learned early on in darkroom work to get a black-black and a white-white and go from there. I think there are exceptions, and images that may not have that, but I remember that being one of the first things you learn to adjust for when evaluating prints and adjusting exposure time. Maybe that's why to me, compared to darkroom work, the HDR images look almost as if they were shot under some sort of filtered or polarized light (like there was a solar eclipse or something). I guess different people just have different styles and preferences.
