"Try to keep your light meter at 0"

That will underexpose bright scenes, and overexpose dark scenes. The auto modes zero/center the meter. That's one of the problems with them. The reason I use M is because I don't want to always zero/center the meter. Zeroing the meter tells me the settings to get middle gray tone. Some subjects/scenes need to be exposed for other tones than middle gray.

How about:

Longer times = more exposure. Larger hole = more exposure. Higher ISO = more exposure.

That could be written on the back of the hand, and the photog wouldn't even need to reach into their pocket for the cheat sheet. No need to list the numbers because the camera keeps track of those.
