How interchangeable is camera memory?

No reason for this question, just curious. So if I take photos on my Nikon D80 with and give my memory card to a Canon user, will their camera be able to see my photos taken by my Nikon?

As far as I am aware so long as the card fits into both cameras then why not, never tried it, someone cleverer than me needs to answer this one

No, they won't as the files are written with different softwae. Same goes for different cameras by the same maker....

Between different camera's with same manufacture is ok, but they won't work in other camera brands?

I was implying using the same cards between a point & shoot & a DSLR from the same brand & Raw images at that...Should have been more specific...

Just save the pics on the computer and you have all the interchangeability that you would need. Why would you want to swap photos from camera to camera to begin with? You can't do much editing on the camera it self. Just my 2 cents ;)

It was more of a question of is it possible, over does it make sense.
