Help me understand what makes this photo worth $3.89 Million?

"The work became famous as being the most expensive photograph in the world when it was auctioned at Sotheby's on February 7 in 2007 for a price of US$3.34 million. A one-of-a-kind photograph depicting Billy the Kid was sold in June 2011 for $2.3 million making it the fifth-most costly photograph ever sold.[1] Another auction in New York in May 2006 fetched $2.25 million for a second print, and a third print sold for $2.48 million in November 2006 at a New York gallery.[2] These would be the fourth and sixth-most costly photographs sold, as of 2011.[3]. On May 12th 2011 Cindy Sherman's "Untitled #96" from 1981 was sold for $3.89 million."

Andreas Gursky is one of the most famous contemporary photographers. It sold for that much because art investment advisers told their clients it's worth that much. Why do banks and investors make billions shifting money around without providing any material goods, services, or advantage to society (apparently a detriment to society these days) ? Don't confuse the art of money making with visual art. :)

If you really want to be amazed check out what Richard Prince's copies of other photographers' photographs go for.

It wont be worth anything in 10-15 years. It was hot at the time and the art world is kind of retarded at times.

Andreas Gursky is one of many artists where at first I was unimpressed and somewhat mystified by their popularity, but over time and after some study his work has grown on me. Seeing the giant prints in person helped. I had similar experiences with Ansel Adam's and William Eggleston's work.

Well a silver tongued sales person might have played a role in it too

HP, exactly. There is a message about US in 99¢ Store. Our society, our desires, our politics, our consumerism. Again it speaks about our humanity.

That's what I've been trying to tell everyone. What makes a pic worth a lot, is it has meaning (to you, to us, to everyone).

He also a master of technique. You see every detail. It's incredible.

Matthew :)

BTW Cindy Sherman's self portrait series shows women in all their facets. It isn't just a pic of her, each is an image of modern women everywhere.

Sounds like typical art BS to me man. It's a freakin' picture of a 99c store with a "Cool story bro" stuck on the back. :rolleyes

Maybe because it's very colorful and appears to be a lot of candy. People love candy and are attracted to colors.
