what percentage of amateur photographers become a pro? Or what percentage of amateur photographers get to the point where they are getting paid for their photography?

see that is hard to say because a lot of people are happy with point and shoot and never really learning anything about photography. I do think 80% of SLR owners have dreams of getting paid to take photos.

yeah good enough.

Getting paid to do photography doesn't make it fun though. ;) Does make a good excuse to buy more equipment. ;)

I put off going pro for many years because I thought it would take the passion out of photography, boy was I wrong, I love it even more now

I would say over all the majority WOULD like to make money with their photography, but majority don't come close and it remains a fun hobby for them.

I went "pro" after being approached by a magazine publisher and his editor. that is where it began 20 years ago with a cover photo and regular assignments. Eventually branching out into wedding and portrait work as well. Now it is my primary job where it used to be my second job when I worked as a nurse. I still have the passion for my work and shooting is fun/work. If you can't have fun at work why bother showing up ?
