Infrared photography

I went looking for a filter to make infrared photos with my D7000 and I was told that infrared filter were only for film cameras? The rep couldn't give me any more information. How are you all making infrared shots? I did more research online and found that you can convert your camera to infrared, but I can't image everyone is doing that?

Very nice to meet you!

Digital cameras have a built-in filter to eliminate IR. You can convert with some PP software. I have a friend who bought an old Canon XT for about $200 and had the conversion done (about $500). He has some incredibly awesome IR shots. Check www.unique.images.ca . I believe that's right - Kirk Saint, Truro, Nova Scotia.

Shoot, learn and share. It will make you a better photographer.

So all these IR photos are done with either film camera's or converted IR cameras? That's a bummer.

Very nice to meet you!

That rep don`t know what he is talking about!!!You can get a R72 filter for Ir[there are others] but I don`t know how sensitive the D7000 will be for Ir since the higher quality cameras have an Ir blocking filter. The older Nikons can shoot with a filter and gives great images but you will need to shoot on a tripod. The D70 is one of the best.

You could always buy a used camera cheap and convert that. For IR only, the camera doesn't need to be anything fancy.

Singh-Ray makes them for digital. But they arent cheap so you have to decide what it is worth to do IR to you. I think they start at around $150 if I remember right.

True Ir means you've captured Ir wavelengths. Usually, you filter out those you don't want so the camera only sees deep red and infrared. Once you captured them, then you need to bring them back to the visible realm -- red to violet.

It may look good SOOC (Straight Out Of Camera), or you may wish to tweak it some. No hard rules.

robbie is a true master of Ir photography. He's really got it down and takes some beautiful pics using it.

I feel badly stepping on his toes here. If you have an Ir question, he's the one to go to.

:)
